Upper Cloister

The upper gallery of the cloister was built between 1717 and 1718. It was formed by a porch structure (made of wood and covered with roofing tiles) that occupied three sides, leaving the church's side free to facilitate the entry of light into the interior.

The tiles, by the Italian Antonio Vital Rifarto (1734), originally occupied the four wings of the cloister and represented allegories of the Four Elements: Air and Water (which are preserved), Earth and Fire, now lost. These panels and the porticoed structure disappeared during the restoration work carried out by the Directorate-General for National Buildings and Monuments (DGEMN) between 1932-1940.
