Galilee

This structure, built in the 1730s, occupies the site of the old Saint John's porch, built by Bishop Diogo Sousa (1496-1505) in the early 1500s. The scenography body, typical of the Baroque language, sought to dignify the north entrance of the church, which was the stage for solemn processions, including those dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of the church. The initials AM (Ave Maria [Hail Mary]) are visible on the lintel of the door leading into the church.

The work, traditionally attributed to Nicolau Nasoni, was supervised and built by the master António Pereira. The Italian painter did, however, paint the vault, which disappeared during the 19th century. The original two flights of stairs were transformed by 20th century restorations. The neo-baroque tiles date from 1934 and are by João Alves de Sá.
